On the Road to Sydney: Oli, Tron, and a Reminder of Why AussyBot Exists

I've been putting off writing this one down because I wanted to let it settle first. But a week on, I'm still thinking about it, so here goes.

Last month I drove down from the northern rivers to Sydney for the Robotics: Science and Systems conference — RSS 2026. About ten hours behind the wheel each way. Bit of a slog. For me it was half the point of the trip.

The drive down

There's something about a long solo drive that clears the noise out. No emails, no phone calls, just highway, roos and paddocks. My thoughts filtered through moonlight, I drifted to another place mentally while automation took over my eyes, ears, feet and hands. They controlled the metal box doing a hundred and ten, and I got time to think. Somewhere around the New England stretch, my meat computer went somewhere familiar. Not to the conference, but to the question of what "intelligence" and "consciousness" actually are, and why they seem to need a body to show up in at all.

Stay with me. The robots are coming. We spend a lot of energy trying to build something that can sense, decide, and act in the physical world — that's the whole humanoid robotics project in a nutshell. And there's a strange parallel in how I think consciousness manifests in us: not as something a computer made from meat manufactures like heat off an engine, but as something that simply needs a vessel to move through — a body, a nervous system, a boundary — before it can experience anything as specific and narrow as "this moment, this place, running out of time." Whatever you want to call the raw ingredient, it seems to need a container before it can actually feel like something to be it.

I'm not about to claim robots like Oli or any other robot is having an inner life. It isn't. But driving down, watching both paddocks and the built environment go by, it struck me that we're now in the business of building the vessels — the bodies, the sensors, the arms and legs — that AI is starting to move through and act via, out here in the physical world rather than just on a server somewhere. Whether or not anything is really "home" in there is a much bigger question than I've got answers to. But it's not a bad thing to chew on for five hours of highway.

Back to less cosmic matters: we talk about all this in the abstract a lot — "AI," "robotics," "the future of work" — like it's a headline rather than something with a delivery date. But it isn't abstract anymore. It's landing in shipping containers. It's got a price list. Most people still think of humanoid robots as a YouTube curiosity rather than something that'll be doing laps of a warehouse floor, an aged care facility, or a classroom within a few years.

That's the whole reason AussyBot exists. There needs to be the on-ramp for this stuff in Australia — not just importing boxes, but actually putting robots in front of people, letting them touch them, program them, support them technically and otherwise. To ask the dumb questions and get over the sci-fi weirdness of it. You can't build trust in a technology through a highlight reel. You build it by standing next to the thing.

So driving to a room full of the actual hardware felt less like a work trip and more like going to check in on the mission.

Meeting the LimX team, and Oli in the flesh

First stop on the floor was the LimX Dynamics booth. So cool getting to meet them in person and not through text and video calls — their team were genuinely great to deal with. No hard sell, no corporate script, just a bunch of people who clearly love the engineering and were happy to nerd out about it with a dumbarse civilian like me. That goes a long way.

They had Oli there — LimX's full-size humanoid — standing in the middle of the booth, and I'll admit it: seeing it in person for the first time was a little surreal. You watch the demo videos online for so long that the robot almost stops feeling real, like it's a piece of CGI wearing a press release. Then you're standing a metre away from it, watching the actuators shift its weight, hearing the very faint whir as it holds a pose, and it clicks that this is a physical object in the room with you, not a video. That gap between "internet robot" and "robot standing next to you" is bigger than I expected, even after immersing myself in the scene for the last couple of years.

Then they had the Tron kit set up for hands-on control, and I couldn't resist. Had a go on the handheld controller first — driving it around, basic manipulation — and then they let me jump on the VR headset for some teleoperation. Controlling a set of robot arms through a headset, watching your own hand movements translate into the robot's in something like real time, is one of those experiences that's hard to describe until you've felt it. It's not like a video game. There's a weird, small thrill in it — like your intention is actually reaching across the room.

Bumping into the unexpected

Wandered over to the Unitree booth later and ran straight into Jovi, which caught me completely off guard — last time I saw him was in China. Robotics is a small world like that; you meet someone on the other side of the planet at a factory or a trade floor, and eight months later you're standing in Sydney having the exact same conversation, just with a different robot between you.

Unitree had both ends of their lineup out on the floor — a couple of their quadrupeds trotting around doing the obstacle work they're known for, and a couple of humanoids running through balance and manipulation demos. Watching a room full of conference-goers, plenty of them seasoned researchers, still stop and film the dogs walking is a good reminder that novelty hasn't worn off yet, even for people inside the industry. That tells you something about where the general public's at.

Why it matters

I keep coming back to that drive. Northern NSW to Sydney and back gives you a lot of dead time to think about the gap between where the tech actually is and where most Australians think it is. The people building this stuff are not hypothesising anymore — they're iterating, shipping, pricing units. The wave is already moving. The only real question is whether Australia is standing on the beach watching it with eyes like saucers wondering if we will survive and running to high ground or are we on surfboards out past the break, waiting for our set. Thinking about riding that monster right in to the beach. Hand me my sexwax.

That's the gap AussyBot is trying to close. Not by hyping it up, but by putting the robots in the room — in schools, in businesses, in front of people who've only ever seen this stuff through a phone screen — the same way LimX had Oli standing in front of me, the same way I got to drive Tron with my own hands instead of just reading a spec sheet.

Great trip. Sore butt from the drive. Worth every kilometre.
